SUMMARY:Social Permaculture at Sterling College
DESCRIPTION:Faculty: Pandora Thomas & Lisa DePiano\nThis five-day Social Permaculture intensive uses permaculture ethics\, principles\, and design language both as a lens to critically explore problems and a creative tool to generate resilient solutions. During our time together\, we will find and articulate the connections between social\, ecological\, and economic problems. By exploring case studies of grassroots organizing\, the cooperative movement\, the solidarity economy\, and participatory budgeting\, we will move beyond problem identification to solutions-oriented planning and action. We will also study and practice frameworks and tools for consensus building\, facilitation\, relational theory\, direct democracy\, commoning\, and participatory design. The course features a combination of thought-provoking readings\, perspective-shifting case studies\, engaging hands-on activities in the outdoors\, and challenging in-class exercises\, providing diverse learners with ample opportunity to build their capacity for catalyzing long-term societal change. After learning to apply permaculture principles to the social domain\, students will be better equipped to hold transformative spaces\, foster resilient\, equitable communities\, and provide generative leadership.

SUMMARY:Car Free NYC: Earth Day Parkway Permablitz
DESCRIPTION:Garment District Plaza: 37th to 36th streets\nPermaculture Parkway\, Josh Sarantitis\nPermablitz Greening the Streets: This Earth Day\, Parkways will activate and beautify New York City’s hardscapes for the public good with a participatory planting of a pop-up parklet on Broadway. Participants will learn techniques for growing food and other multi-purpose plants in urban areas\, using raised beds\, including materials selection\, proper planting techniques\, spacing\, watering and natural fertilizers. Learn how to set up self-irrigating beds by using ollas\, a traditional watering system that uses unglazed clay pots to irrigate plant roots instead of watering the surface of the planter. This technique saves water and helps plants establish healthy root systems. Parkways ethically sources the best materials for their parks including local\, natural and recycled materials. Each of our self-irrigating garden beds contain a custom organic soil and compost blend & plants that are selected for climate\, beauty and ecosystem function. Workshop held from 12 pm to 3 pm.
